Thermostatic radiator valve stuck? How to free a TRV pin

If one radiator is stone cold while the rest of your heating works fine, a stuck thermostatic radiator valve (TRV) is often the culprit. The good news is that freeing a stuck TRV pin is usually a simple job you can attempt yourself, as long as you follow a few safety steps.

How a TRV works and what happens when it sticks

A thermostatic radiator valve controls how much hot water flows into a radiator, based on the room temperature. The numbered head on the valve senses the air temperature and pushes a small pin in and out of the valve body.

When the pin can move freely, the valve opens and closes as it should. After a summer of being left fully off, that pin can seize in the closed position. The result is classic: all other radiators heat up, but the one with the stuck valve stays cold from top to bottom.

Safety prep before touching the TRV

Before you start, you do not need to drain the system to try freeing a TRV pin. You are only removing the plastic or metal head, not the brass valve body itself. That said, a few simple precautions make the job safer and cleaner.

  • Turn the heating off and let the radiator cool fully

  • Have an old towel or tray under the valve in case of minor drips

  • Use hand tools only, not power tools or hammers

  • Stop immediately if you see water leaking from the valve body

If at any point you feel unsure, it is always sensible to pause and contact a qualified heating engineer.

Step-by-step: freeing a stuck TRV pin

1. Turn the heating off and prepare the area

Switch your heating off at the programmer or thermostat and allow the radiator to go fully cold. This helps you work safely and also makes it easier to test later, as you will more clearly feel hot water returning to the radiator.

Lay a towel under the TRV to protect the floor and catch any small drips. You should not expect water to pour out, but it is best to be prepared.

2. Remove the TRV head without draining the system

Most TRV heads are held on by a knurled ring or a small screw. Turn the TRV to maximum first, then unscrew the collar by hand or with an adjustable spanner if needed. On some models, you may need to undo a small screw hidden under a cap.

Once the collar or screw is loose, gently pull the TRV head away from the valve body. The brass valve should remain firmly attached to the pipework and radiator. You might hear a faint hiss as the head comes off, which is normal.

3. Locate and assess the small metal pin

With the head removed, you will see a small metal pin sticking out of the brass valve body. This pin should normally move in and out a couple of millimetres under spring pressure.

If the pin is stuck flush with the body and will not move, it is likely stuck closed, stopping hot water from entering the radiator. If it is sticking quite far out and feels very loose, the valve may be stuck open instead.

4. Gently work the pin in and out

Using your fingertip or the blunt end of a spoon, press the pin inwards gently and then let it spring back. Do this several times to try to free any buildup that is holding it in place. You should feel a clear spring action.

If the pin does not move at all, you can try gripping it lightly with a pair of pliers and carefully pulling it outwards a millimetre or two, then pressing it back in again. Be very gentle, as too much force risks snapping the pin.

5. Light tapping to help free a stubborn pin

If the pin is still stiff, very light tapping can help. Use a small spanner or screwdriver handle and tap the side of the brass valve body around the pin, not the pin itself. Short, light taps can loosen internal deposits.

Avoid heavy blows, hammers or anything sharp. Brute force can damage the valve, break the pin or cause leaks around the gland, which will turn a simple fix into a more involved repair.

6. Refit the TRV head and test the radiator

Once the pin is moving freely with a noticeable spring, refit the TRV head. Align it carefully, slide it on and tighten the collar or screw so it is firm but not overtightened. Set the TRV to a mid position, such as 3.

Turn the heating back on and allow the system to run for 15 to 30 minutes. Check if the previously cold radiator now warms up evenly from the bottom upwards.

Common pitfalls that keep a radiator cold

If the pin now moves freely but the radiator is still cold, the issue may lie elsewhere. It is important not to keep attacking the TRV if the fault is actually in another part of the system.

Typical pitfalls include a seized valve body where the internals are stuck even though the pin moves, a snapped pin from heavy-handed force, or a leaking gland where water escapes around the pin. These issues are usually a job for an engineer rather than a DIY fix.

Also check that the lockshield valve on the other end of the radiator is open, the radiator has been bled of trapped air, and the system is not badly sludged up. Thick sludge or circulation problems normally show up as multiple radiators performing poorly or cold at the bottom.

Repair, replace or look at the wider system?

If freeing the pin restores normal heat to the radiator, the valve can often be left in place, although a repeat problem every autumn suggests the TRV is ageing. In such cases, it can be sensible to plan a like-for-like TRV replacement at a convenient time.

If the pin will not move at all, keeps sticking, or the valve starts to leak when you work on it, replacement of the whole TRV body by a heating engineer is usually the safest route. This will require draining or isolating part of the system.

Where several radiators are cold or patchy, or you have regular issues with stuck valves, that points to wider circulation problems. Sludge, poor balancing or an undersized pump may be to blame, and a full system check is more effective than just swapping individual valves.

When to call a professional heating engineer

There is a limit to what is sensible as a DIY job. You should stop and call an engineer if you see water leaking from the TRV body or around the pin, the valve body itself is seized and the pin trick does not work, or the pin snaps or feels very loose and wobbly.

It is also time to call in help if more than one radiator is affected, radiators are repeatedly cold at the bottom, or your boiler is cutting out or making unusual noises. These symptoms suggest system-wide issues rather than a single stuck valve.
